COSMETIC CONTACT LENSES

COSMETIC CONTACT LENS

Cosmetic contact lenses are typically used to enhance or alter the color of the eye.

Sometimes this is done for theatrical reasons and other times it is for personal reasons.

Cosmetic contacts can be prescribed in both vision correcting and non-vision correcting versions.   Both are considered medical devices and require a doctor's prescription.

RISKY OVER-THE-COUNTER COLORED CONTACT LENSES

The Internet is filled with suppliers that want to sell all kinds of colored contact lenses, especially around Halloween.  Legitimate retailers will require you to provide a doctor's prescription, even if you don't require any correction.  This is because contact lenses are considered medical devices.

This is for your protection.  Think about it for a second.  You only get one set of eyes in a lifetime and putting an object of unknown origin in your eye can cause a number of problems.  Chances are you wouldn't take a medication without knowing it was specifically for you and where it came from.

Some foreign produced cosmetic contact lenses have reportedly not been properly disinfected, leading to even higher risks of causing an eye infection.  Anime styled lenses that cover most of your eye have been illegal in the United States since 2005.

PROSTHETIC CONTACT LENSES

Sometimes improving your vision is not the goal.  Prosthetic lenses can be used to mask irregularities in the coloration of an eye due to trauma, birth defects or eye diseases.

They can also be used to help block excess light or glare to improve eye function.

In the image on the right, a hand painted contact lens was created to help this patient mask irregularities of the pupil and iris.
