WHAT ARE EYE ALLERGIES?

Eye allergies, also know as allergic conjunctivitis, are a common eye condition.  

Allergic conjunctivitis occurs when a person's eyes come into contact with an allergen, a substance that causes a misfiring of the immune system in response. 

The overreacting immune system releases histamines which causes the eyes to become red and inflamed.  

People with other allergies are more likely to develop allergic conjunctivitis.

WHAT CAUSES EYE ALLERGIES?

There are several types of eye allergies. They include:

Seasonal Conjunctivitis-these are the most common and are generally caused by pollen from trees, grasses or weeds. 

Perennial Conjunctivitis-these types of eye allergies last all year.  Common causes of perennial conjunctivitis include reactions to dust mites, pet dander and other indoor allergens.

Contact Conjunctivitis-often triggered by makeup, perfume, medications or substances that get into eyes. Symptoms usually appear 2-4 days after the allergen comes into contact with the eye.

Giant Papillary Conjunctivitis(GPC)-caused by an allergic reaction to contact lenses. Poor hygiene when handling contact lenses, solutions and cases can also contribute.

SYMPTOMS OF EYE ALLERGIES

  • Red, irritated eyes
  • Tearing
  • Itchiness
  • Swollen eyelids
  • Sensitivity to light
  • Soreness, burning or pain
Often you'll also have other allergy symptoms like sneezing or an itchy, runny or stuffy nose.

GETTING RELIEF FROM EYE ALLERGIES

The key to treating eye allergies is to limit or prevent contact to the allergen causing the problem. Eye medications can also provide relief.

Prevention tips include:
  • Avoid outdoor triggers- Stay inside when pollen counts are high. Keep windows closed in both your home and car. When outdoors, wear sunglasses or eyeglasses to help keep pollen out of your eyes.
  • Minimize indoor triggers-Wash linens frequently in hot water and use allergen-reducing covers for your bedding. When cleaning, use a wet rag or mop to trap allergens. Consider hard surface flooring instead of carpeting if pet dander is a trigger. Avoid exposure to harsh chemicals. 
  • Don't rub your eyes-this will only irritate them more.  
  • Artificial tears-can temporarily wash away allergens
  • Decongestant and/or antihistamine eye drops-either over the counter or prescription
  • Oral antihistamines
  • Steroids
  • Allergy Shots
