HAVING TROUBLE SEEING DISTANT OBJECTS?

You might have a condition called Myopia, or nearsightedness.

WHAT IS MYOPIA?

Nearsightedness or myopia is the most common refractive error of the eye, affecting nearly 30 percent of the U.S. population.

Myopia is a vision condition in which people can see close objects clearly, but objects farther away appear blurry.

Myopia occurs if the eyeball is too long or the cornea (the clear front cover of the eye) is too curved.

As a result, the light entering the eye focuses images in front of your retina instead of on your retina.

This causes images in the distance to appear blurred.

WHAT CAUSES MYOPIA?

Though the exact cause of myopia is unknown, the underlying cause is believed to be a combination of genetic and environmental factors.

Risk factors include eye fatigue from computer use and other extended near vision tasks, greater time spent indoors and a family history.

SYMPTOMS OF MYOPIA

  • Blurry vision when looking at distant objects
  • The need to squint or partially close the eyelids to see clearly
  • Headaches caused by eyestrain
  • Difficulty seeing while driving a vehicle, especially at night
  • Need to sit closer to the television, movie screen or the front of the classroom
  • Being unaware of objects in the distance
  • Excessive blinking
